When hiring entry-level employees, managers place a higher importance on soft skills such as attitude and work ethic rather than on hard trade skills, according to a study from Instructure, a software service company.

The study also found that once hired, managers regard the skills entry-level employees learned in school almost as important as soft skills for success at work.

Career experts and hiring managers weighed in on today’s most in-demand job skills and how to improve them:
Self-management:  Companies are eager to find employees who are able to keep themselves on track without excessive supervision or micromanaging. Furthermore showing that you have an understanding of what the organisation wants to achieve through its products and services, and how it competes in its marketplace will give you a better understanding of the objectives and goals of the business.

Social media skills: Most people need some IT skills to find work today. Acquiring basic IT skills and being familiar with using a computer may open up a wide range of employment opportunities and increase your marketability in the workplace.

Creative problem solving:  It’s good to show that you can approach problems from different angles; knowing how to analyze and use data is important, but it takes a combination of those strong analytical skills with the creative vision to apply it to the ‘big picture’. The ability to apply both logic and creativity to solve problems is highly valued by employers.
